Building strong foundations, confidence, and structure.

Middle school is where academic expectations begin to increase, and where gaps in foundational understanding often start to impact confidence.

Many students at this stage are capable, but feel:

  • overwhelmed by new material

  • unsure how to approach their work

  • frustrated as math becomes more abstract

These challenges are often not about ability, but about missing structure and incomplete foundational understanding.

Math is primary focus at this level, with an emphasis on strengthening core skills and building confidence.

Math Support: Foundations Through Early Algebra

Support includes:

  • Number sense and foundational math skills

  • Multiplication and division fluency

  • Fractions, ratios, and proportions

  • Pre-algebra concepts

  • Early algebra foundations

  • Breaking down and understanding word problems

Sessions are designed to help students connect new material to what they already know - building a stronger and more complete understanding over time.

Students will learn to:

  • recognize patterns and relationships within numbers

  • apply concepts across courses and disciplines

  • develop clear, repeatable problem-solving strategies

  • develop their mental math ability

When Students Are Struggling in Math

You may notice your student:

  • still counting on their fingers

  • struggling to recall basic math facts

  • feeling overwhelmed or shutting down during math work

  • getting stuck without knowing how to move forward

These are signs that foundational understanding needs support - not that a student "isn't good at math".

Beyond Math: Building Academic Skills

At this level, sessions also focus on helping students:

  • develop organization and planning habits

  • build confidence in their ability to learn

  • approach assignments more independently

  • feel more comfortable asking for help

Support for Different Learning Needs

This includes:

  • slowing down and rebuilding conceptual understanding

  • using visual and structured problem-solving methods

  • reinforcing patterns and connections between concepts

  • reducing overwhelm through clear, step-by-step approaches

For students who need a more individualized approach, sessions may incorporate strategies aligned with dyscalculia-informed support.
